Some of many perennial plants to grow and enjoy.
Delphinium
Delphiniums are herbaceous perennial plants that like a sunny site and a deep, highly enriched and well drained loam, and do require ample water in hot dry weather.
If the flower stalks are cut down as soon as they have bloomed then a second crop of flowers is possible in the early autumn.
Propagation is best carried out by division of the root system on more established plants, though cuttings are easily rooted when taken as the new shoots reach a height of 8-10 cm. All flower from June to August and grow up to 1.5m in height. For named varieties see grower’s catalogues.
Myosotis(Forget Me Not)
There are annual and perennial plants in this species, some of the latter being known as biennials. All thrive in sun and ordinary garden soil.
Myosotis grown as herbaceous perennials can be sown in the open from April to July or propagated by means of division in October and planted out 15 cm apart.
Different species flower from April to September though most are known for their early flowering. Height 15 - 25 cm.
Geranium(Crane’s bill)>
This perennial plant likes ordinary garden soil provided that it is well drained, an open, sunny site is also preferable. Plant can be grown from seed sown in March or August, (under glass), or plants can be divided from October to March.
Mature side shoots can be taken as cuttings in August and grown on until the following year. Height 45 - 60 cm.
Helleborus(Christmas Rose)
The various species of this charming genus form one of the garden's greatest assets, flowering at a time when there is little or no colour in the garden. These herbaceous perennial plants thrive in a well dug, light and moist soil border.
Propagate by division in February or March, splitting into clumps of not less than 5 - 6 crowns.
Plant out 45 cm apart, top dress after flowering and feed. Named varieties produce colours from white to blue to yellow to red and many shade in between.
Hemerocallis(Day Lily)
Hardy herbaceous perennial plants which do well in moist, light and deep soil in a shady border. The plants flower continuously over a period of 2 - 3 months, and as the name suggests the
flowers only last a day or so.
Propagation is by division in April or November. There are many colours from pale yellow through to brown and pinks. All flower from May to August. Height 30 cm to 1 metre.
