Garden borders need colourful hardy herbaceous plants.
Hosta(Plantain Lily)
Hardy herbaceous plants suitable for the border, shrubbery or grow in pots. They require a rich, well dug soil and thrive in sun or shade. Very susceptible to slug damage so place ash or something similar around the base of the plants.
Mainly grown for their attractive leaf colour varying from plain green to blue to many variegated leaves of mixed greens, white and yellows.
Propagate by means of division in spring or autumn. Height up to 45 cm.
Kniphofia(Red Hot Poker)

Tall, hardy perennials, which thrive in a rich, well drained and sandy soil in sunny or partially shaded borders.
Sow seed indoors in March - April or divide the clumps in March, planting 45 - 75 cm apart.
Protect plants in exposed places from frost in winter and apply a mulch in the spring.
Phlox
Full sun is required by these herbaceous plants, but protection is needed in strong winds. They succeed best in a deep, rich and moist but well drained loam. Stake the plants early and thin out weak growths.
Seed can be sown in the open during April. Cuttings are taken from young growths in the autumn and rooted in the greenhouse, planting out the following May after hardening off the plants in March.
Phlox can also be propagated by division in February, March or October. Flowering season is July - October with heights of up to 1 metre.
Ranunculus
Tuberous rooted herbaceous perennial plants. Most will grow in partial shade in a moist, well dug, rich, sandy soil. These plants do not like to dry out, so keep well watered during the summer and in drought conditions.
Propagation is by means of division from November to April. Plant the tubers, claws down 5 - 10 cm deep early in February or March surrounded by sand. Height of the plants is from 30 cm to 1.2 metres, depending on the variety.
Sedum(Stonecrop)

Sedums are largely perennials that do well in a dry, light, limey soil. They all like the sun or partial shade, most of the smaller kinds are suitable only for the rock garden but the taller varieties such as Sedum spectabile are ideal for the herbaceous border.
They come mainly in a range of pinks and reds. Height 30 cm.
