Even the cheapest Flowering House Plants provide a splash of colour.
Cyclamen
The delicate, shimmering flowers of these flowering house plants, are held elegantly above a mound of heart shaped, patterned leaves make the cyclamen a pleasing display throughout the winter months.
Cyclamen is one of the most popular flowering house plants. They provide a long period of colour and they are cheap and good value for money.
Cyclamen are grown from corms and when the plants have stopped flowering they are usually thrown away but keep watering and feeding the plant from April to July and then when the leaves start to turn yellow, stop watering and allow the corm to rest for a few months in a cool and shady spot in the garden, laying
the pot on its side.
In August re-pot the corm into some fresh compost and bring inside, giving it bright light but not full sun.
The plant will be flowering again for Christmas.
General Care
Cyclamen are relatively easy to look after. They enjoy high humidity. Stand on a bed of pebbles. Keep the soil moist and avoid wetting the corm.
Feed with a liquid plant fertilizer once a week during the growing period. Place in a cool place away from strong sunlight in a temperature of 10-15 degrees C (50-60F).
Kalanchoe
Kalanchoe or Flaming Katy is a popular flowering house plant that will flower for several months on end and is available in the colours of red, orange, pink, cream and yellow.
Kalanchoe is a succulent withthick fleshy leaves forming a compact mound from which grow long thin stems carrying a dense cluster of flowers.
Once the plants have stopped flowering it is hard to get the plants to produce more flowers. But they are easy to propagate by taking tip cuttings of 5cm (2") long, removing the lower pair of leaves and planting in a peat based rooting compost.
Cuttings will root in approx 2 weeks in a temp of 21c (70f). Pot the cuttings on into a soil based compost and pinch out the shoots to make the plants bushier.
Unless these flowering house plants are treated with a growth retardant the plants will grow to be larger than the commercially grown plants.
General Care
Easy to look after, but being succulents do not over water, allowing the compost to dry out before watering.Feed when in flower with a general feed every month.
This is a plant that needs plenty of light for the flowers to show their full colour. Place the plant in a sunny window or the flowers may fade. Keeping the room temperature above 15c (60f) in winter.
Chrysanthemum
The Chrysanthemum is available throughout the year. These colourful and undemanding plants with their long lasting flowers are a good alternative to a bunch of flowers.
Once these flowering house plants have finished flowering they should be discarded, for they are grown commercially using controlled lighting to bring them into flower at any time of year and also they have been treated with a growth retardant, without which the plants would grow to their natural height of
approx 1m (3ft) plus.
Having said that the pot chrysanth is cheap, long lasting and available in a wide range of colours.
General Care
Easy to look after, watering regularly as the plants will be pot bound and will soon dry out. Feeding is not necessary. Give plants plenty of light but keep out of strong sunlight.
Plants will also last longer if kept under cool conditions, a year round temperature of 10-15c (60f) suiting it best.
Poinsettia
The poinsettia is THE flowering house plant to have at Christmas. The long lasting, brilliant bracts of this plant provide colour for several months, even into late spring. Originally from Mexico, this plant is now grown all over the world for the Christmas market.
The actual flowers of the plants are small and berry-like in the centre of the more colourful, leaf like bracts. They come in a variety of colours, pink, cream, white, pink/cream, but the most popular being red.
Poinsettias are part of the Euphorbia family which has poisonous sap, so care should be taken when handling the plants.
Growing in there natural habitat the plants can reach a height of 4.5m (15ft) of more. but commercially grown plants are treated with a growth retardant to limit their height.
Poinsettias are best treated as short term plants as they need special care to produce the plant that you see in the shops at xmas.
General Care
These flowering house plants are easy to care for. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings. Feeding an established plant is not necessary.
Give the plants plenty of light keeping out of direct sunlight with a minimum temperature of 12c (55f), away from any draughts.
