Best advice on Push, Electric, Petrol, Ride on and Cordless Lawn Mowers.
Lawn Mowers can be divided into 4 classes :-
1) Push Mowers
2) Electric lawn Mowers
3) Petrol Mowers
4) Ride on Mowers
Push Mowers
As the name suggests,You have to provide the momentum for this type of Mower.
Used only for small lawns they usually have a cylinder with 3 or 4 blades attached, of 30cm in length, and a box at the front of the mower to catch the grass clippings.
The 3 bladed Mower, is or used to be called a roughcut for obvious reasons and is used for grass areas that do not require a fine finish.
Electric Lawn Mowers - (Connected by cable to the mains supply)
These Mowers are in the middle price bracket and can also be sub-divided into 3 types :-
A) Hover Mowers
These have a plastic body and float over the grass on a cushion of air. Underneath the skirt of the Lawn mower is a disc with 2 blades attached made of nylon, which do
the actual cutting.
They come with or without a grass box.
Normally used for rougher grass areas, or areas that are not cut as often i.e.
Back lawns where the Kids play.
B) Rotary Lawn Mowers
Similar to the Hover above except that it usually has a metal body and is pushed on wheels.
C) Cylinder Mower
Plastic moulded body with a steel cylinder and 4 blades. Detachable grass box.
Used for finer grasses, front lawns etc. Has a roller to give that lawn a striped effect.
IMPORTANT
Always use an RCD (Residual Current Device), when using electric in the garden.
This could save your life, or at least save you from a nasty shock should you happen
to cut through any cables or touch any live wires.
(By live wires, I do not mean the Kids. There's no protection from them).
Cordless electric Lawn mowers or Battery powered mowers are more expensive than the normal electric mower, but you have the freedom to move without dragging a cable behind.
Not as powerful as the electric and you always need to have them fully charged or you may run out of power halfway through cutting the lawn.
Petrol Mowers
The best but most expensive and heaviest. Used only for the larger lawn.
Split into 2 categories :-
A) Petrol Rotary mower
Same as the electric, but larger, heavier and more powerful.
Used for rough areas of lawn where the grass gets overgrown. Some have power to
the rear wheels which makes mowing a lot easier.
B) Cylinder Mowers
Can have up to 8 fixed blades on the cylinder, used for the finer grasses and lawns.
e.g. Bowling Greens, with a cylinder up to 90cm across. These are the best mowers, used for the better lawns and larger areas.
Ride-on Mowers (Riding Mowers or Lawn Tractors)
These really are for the big garden with a grass area of 1/2 acre +.
The Ride-on mowers start at around £1,000 for a 6.5hp engine with a 24" cut up to a Lawn Tractor with a 20hp engine with a 50"
cut in the price region of £4,000.
All these have a rotary disc beneath the machine and grass is collected in a container at the back.
Cutting heights can be adjusted from 1/2" to 4".
